MAGAZINE ASSIGNMENTS

Sometimes when I go on assignments for the magazine that I write for, I am meeting somebody else there that also works freelance. Sometimes it is a photographer, other times it is another writer, if it is an event that is large enough. It is always interesting to hear other people’s stories of where they came from and how they got there. One guy that was taking pictures for a concert that I was covering was a Tampa bankruptcy attorney who decided that he did not enjoy bankruptcy law and that his true calling was music. He had minored in photography when he was in college, and when he made that life altering decision he realized that photography could be his way into the music industry. I have worked with him a few times since the first time that we met, and he really is a talented photographer. Many other people I meet on the job are just like me. Former journalism students that are working freelance and taking any writing gig they can to pay the bills. It is not a glamorous life, but at least we are getting by and getting to do what we enjoy doing. I would love it if I were able to maintain a consistent living off of it.
